Atlantic Center for the Arts is offering a residency for young writers modeled after their successful and widely respected Master Artists-in-Residence Program. This unique, two week residential program focuses on mentorship by distinguished master writers, as well as the opportunity for participants to work within a multi-disciplinary peer community. The selection process for this unique literary residency opportunity is competitive. Atlantic Center for the Arts receives the applications, and forwards them to the Master Writers-in-Residence for selection. A total of 21 writers will be selected.

Over the past 25 years, through its internationally-renowned residency program, ACA has hosted 300 distinguished Master Artists, who have worked with and mentored over 3,500 emerging and midcareer artists. 21 teen writers will be chosen to participate in workshops taught by three Master Writers from three writing disciplines; poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction/memoir. During the residency Master Writers lead formal/informal sessions with the teen writer groups. These sessions are interactive, while allowing time for the development of ideas. Teens can strengthen skills in their primary genre, while exploring and experimenting with other forms of literature.

The residency will take place at Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA), an artists' community on the east coast of central Florida from July 24 through August 6, 2011.

ACA is located on ten acres of pine and palmetto forest, representing the interaction between nature, environment, and creativity. Nestled within a 67 acre ecological preserve, the campus is connected by raised boardwalks. Students will reside in two buildings containing 28 single occupancy housing units (4 handicap accessible). Supplementary writing workshops will be tailor made to the interests of the group, and may include topics such as Seeking Publication, Presenting Your Work, and Revision Techniques.

Recreational activities will include evening readings, films, an open mic night, a trip to New Smyrna’s beaches, and a printmaking workshop.

Atlantic Center for the Arts’ Community Arts Manager will facilitate the program, and chaperones will be on-site 24-hours a day throughout the residency.
