The Leeward expedition is a fast-paced sailing, hiking, and shore exploration
adventure that visits 10 different islands on a voyage that stretches from
the BVI south to the island of Antigua and back.
The Leewards form the Eastern
boundary of the Caribbean and include impressive tropical islands like Saba,
Statia, St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Barts, and St. Martin. Balmy trade winds, lush
rainforests and pink sandy beaches make this an ideal destination. The cultural
and geological diversity seen over such a small geographic area is enormous;
customs and currencies change as often as the language spoken. Some islands
are flat and dry, others mountainous and verdant.
Sailing aboard a 50-ft monohull
or 46-ft catamaran, the voyage's main focus is long distance sailing
and island exploration, yet there will be time to take advantage of these incredible
waters by scuba diving, snorkeling, water skiing and wakeboarding. Shore side,
the mountainous terrain offers some of the most challenging and rewarding hiking
in the Caribbean.
You'll conquer the 500 rock-carved steps of The Ladder
at Saba, and reach the peak of The Quill - an almost perfectly symmetrical
extinct volcano on the island of Nevis. First you climb up... and then,
while holding onto vines, down into the crater past huge trees, ferns and carpets
of moss. Using your new skills to navigate back to the BVI you will rejoin
the rest of the AQ fleet just in time for the final race and barbecue.
